Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara has released his first music video, titled “Sansare”. This song and video depict a love story which had a very sad ending.

A man is walking down the street with an umbrella. He is about to tell you the past that is haunting him forever.  He tells his lost love in a melody that he has never sang before. You look at him and question, why on earth this lawyer is lamenting on streets in a heavy rainy day?

This lawyer is someone we knew in Sri Lankan Political Arena. The song “Sansare” sings by none other than the Member of Parliament, Dayasiri Jayasekara. “Sansare” is the first visual music video that Dayasiri Jayasekara has done. Story of Rashmi And The Lessons That We Should Learn

$

Rashmi Nimesha Gunawardana is a ten year old young student of Daraniyagala Deloluwa Junior School, who had been born with only one leg and going to a normal school just like other children in her village. However, she has never been discouraged by having one leg to do all the work in the world. Instead she used what she had as an individual, to conquer her challenges in everyday life.

Recently, Rashmi was able to pass her grade five scholarship exam with flying colours and became the first to get 153 marks, which was easily made her qualified to enter to a leading school in the Capital of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Rashmi Nimesha had been the only student of Deraniyagal Deloluwa School to attain such a high mark for the last ten years. Therefore, there’s no doubt that she is a gem to her school and to her Deraniyagala community.

“Rashmi Nimesha, a ten year old with only one leg is a true role-model of our society.

She challenge our negatively label taboo “disable child,” or “crippled one.”

Both of Rashimi’s parents are school teachers. Her father, Mr. D.P. Sarath Gunawardana is a teacher at the school, where Rashmi attends. Her mother, R. M. Dammika Podi Manike is a music teacher in Seethawaka Midddle School in Deraniyagala, Sri Lanka. Both parents support Rashmi’s growth and success by attending her needs, wishes, and concerns.

Rashmi’s father says that there are challenges in the future related to conducting Rashmi Nimesha’s higher studies as a student. He mentions that Rashmi is in a position where she is unable to feed by herself as there are no hands and does everything with her left leg. Moreover, he says that someone needs to help her with removing shoes, and then needs to help her to do her writings (I believe what her father saying is, Rashimi needs someone’s assistance such as, taking the pencil and positioning the pencil between toes).

“Everyone in her classroom helps her. Rashmi performs a good leadership in her class. First, she went to Sanasa Pre-school in Deraniyagala. Teacher’s in that school put a lot of effort to help her. All teachers encouraged and they were behind her from grade one. A lot of parents overjoy when their children pass grade five scholarship exam. It is not that we are not happy but as parents my wife and I are helpless when looking at what difficulties we have ahead of us as. What we desperately need is guidance and some sort of strong social assistance. My daughter always travels in a vehicle. We take her to school in a rented vehicle. She cannot be taken in a motor bicycle. Rashmi needs some sort of electronically working arm gadget, which would immensely help my daughter to conquer some of her difficulties” mentioned Rashmi’s father with a heavy heart.

When a journalist questioned Rashmi about her victory, she humbly replied that she has not given up her dreams. “Even I am destined to born with only one leg, I never pitied myself. Since I have both my parents, I never felt sad. The biggest dream I had at the time, was to pass the scholarship exam with flying colours and receive lot of gifts and awards from President Mahinda Rajapaksha as brothers and sisters (students) who were entitled to such great gifts in previous time” said young Rashmi Nimesha with an innocent smile.

Rashmi Nimesha is a true role-model who shows us that there is no need to give pity look at people who are disabled. There is no need for us to look at children or adults like Rashmi Nimesha with sympathy or negativity.

  • All we have to do is, look at what strengths and skills they have to offer the society and cherish them.
  • We should not talk or label them as “Disabled people” or “Handicapped people” or else “Cripples.”
  • We need to respect people like Rashimi as they deserve the same gratitude, attitude, and respect like us.
Call them by the first person such as, “People with disability” rather than Disabled people. Call them with Special Needs Children or Special Needs rather than Handicap or Cripple Children.
  • Always remember it is the respect and value you give to another human by using the word PEOPLE at the first (first person in communication)

Rashimi Nimesha Gunawardana is another courageous child in our society that teaches us what it means to look at someone’s strengths rather their weaknesses or disabilities. This is a good lesson for all of us in Sri Lanka.

We wish you all the success and courage, dear daughter Rashmi!

New Radio Channel Frequencies

Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has decided to reallocate the radio frequencies to all the FM radio channels in Sri Lanka from November 01, 2012. There are 45 broadcasting channels in Sri Lanka currently functioning and they you may have to tune your radio tomorrow to listen to your favorite radio program or radio channel. This new allocation of radio frequencies is to minimize the technical issues which have effect the sound reception of most of the radio channels with the current allocation of radio frequencies.

Radio channels in Sri Lanka operate within 87.5 – 108 MHz frequency range and TRCSL has the authority to determine the use of FM frequencies within the country.

New Radio Channel FrequenciesThe new allocation of radio frequencies will ensure that all broadcasting services could be accessed with ease. Also, this will make the sound broadcast clearly received. One remarkable improvement with the new plan is that listeners do not have to re-tune their radio to stay with their preferred radio channel when they are traveling within the country.

The existing frequency separation between two radio channels was 100 kHz and it hinders the clarity of sound. With the new allocation system there will be more space between two radio frequencies (300 kHz) and this will enable the listeners to have a clear reception in any part of the country from any single frequency.

Following are the new radio frequencies of radio stations in Sri Lanka.

Popularly known as “Dan Chuty” due to her role in “Chanchala Rekha” sinhala film, Nadeeka Gunasekara is one of talented and beautiful Sri Lankan cinema actresses. Even though her acting is now limited to guest appearances in selected movies, she is still in the heart of many Sinhala film fans. Recently we had a question in our Lanka Help Q & A site regarding Nadeeka Gunasekara’s family life and it prompted me to find more information about her.

Early life:
Nadeeka is the first child of Stanley Gunasekara, who worked at the Post Office in Nawalapitiya, Sri Lanka and her mother, Thalapatha Gunasekara, worked as a school teacher.
Nadeeka and family lived with Thalatha’s parents at Naranwela until she was 3 years old and later moved into Charle’s De Silva flats at Colombo.
According to Nadeeka’s parents, Nadeeka was a stubborn young girl who gets angry with her parents so often. So, parents had to lift and cuddle to cool her down after every childish quarrels she had with them.

Nadeeka GunasekaraHer first school was Udugoda Vidyalaya and it was only for three years before she had to change her school to Uduheenthanna Senadhikara Vidyalaya due to his father’s transfer to new post office. Due to these transfers Nadeeka had to change her school frequently and Her thrid school was in Gampola. When her father got a transfer to Monaragala in 1970, she was admitted to Pushpadana Ladies College in Kandy. Nadeeka’s last school was Bandrawela Vishaka College where she had to stay in a boarding place with her younger sister.

Nadeeka’s mother is also a film actress also a teacher. Nadeeka’s parents were separated due to her mother’s acting career. So her dad initially did not like Nadeeka to be an actress. However he blessed her to continue to act advising her to do what ever she does in right manner.

She did her Advance Level exam in Art stream and at that time she was attending Mahamaya girls college in Kandy. Surprisingly, she has never engaged in sport at school and claims she did not even sing a song at school.

First Film and Acting Life:
Nadeeka appeared in the Shinahala Movie called, “Kanchana” in 1980 and it was her first step to the cinema. Nadeeka acted in 13 films as a leading role, produced 2 films and appeared in 32 films. Her latest film in 2012 was “Senasuru Maruwa” a successful comedy film.

M.A. Sangadasa chose her to act in Kanchana film when she was still in A/L classes. However, Nadeeka managed to pass A/L with good results which enable her to enter Kelaniya university. As her university was closed few months she managed to appear in few other very good movies like “Thani Tharuwa”, “Vajira”, “Biththi Hathara”, “Chanchala Rekha” under new talented directors who was making a change in Sinhala cinema.

Real Name:
Though popularly known as Nadeeka Gunasekara, her real name is Disanayaka Wijesuriyage Sandya Darshani Gunasekara. Siri Kularathna has given her this screen name as she appeared in her first film when she was a student.

First Award:
1987 was a remarkable year for her as she graduated from Kelaniya university and she won her first award as up coming actress of the year at Lux film award ceremony.

Family Life:
Like most other actresses of that time, Nadeeka’s main priority was her acting career and delayed her marriage. Still she does not worry about that delay as it allowed her to gather enough life experiences to become a better mother and a wife. Her husband is Mr. Suren Hapuarachci who is a businessman and the couple has a daughter. Nadeeka claims that they have dedicated their lives now to daughter Thenuki’s betterment. As a result she now appears in films very rarely and instead she runs a garment business dedicating more time to family and house work.

In Sri Lanka over 87% were using mobile phones in year 2011 and by now the country’s level of mobile phone usage has gone drastically high. Some household members have two or three mobile phones per person and it could be the reason that the statistics shows hike of mobile phone utilization from year 2006 onwards. Due to increase demand of mobile phones, different manufactures are producing the mobile phones in different factories and locations such as China, India etc… to reduce the cost. There are high chances that the quality also hampered when things come in cheap rate.
Many Sri Lankans find carrying a mobile as a fashion. However, some finds it highly needy thing. Whatever the cause is, most of Sri Lankans do not look into necessary facts and details when buying the “right” mobile for their use. Even some people give their attention to the new tech features of the phone and the service package deals, they never think twice if the phone they are buying is approved by the TRCSL as regulated phone for proper utilization.
To check whether your mobile phone is quality wise have approval of TRCSL, check the IMEL Number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) on the original phone box. If not, you can find 15-digit serial number that is placed on the mobile battery sticker, when you remove the battery at the back. Only TRCSL registered and approved mobile phones have this serial number.

Mobile Phone's IMEL
Always remember to check for IMEI Number on your phone when you buying one from any electronic shop. However, there are some crooks in the market who does illegal prints of IMEI Numbers to deceive innocent customers. So, a customer can check the genuine IMEI by simply typing IMEI IMEI Number of the particular mobile phone and then sms to 1909 number. The customer will receive a SMS similar to this
